Resources (The Evolution of Desire)

Resources

The gist of this section is that men are one long breeding experiment run by women. Women look for men to gain access to resources. Buss explains this because sex-role socialization of women throughout history.

In primitive culture, men with the most land attract the most wives.

Globally, women usually marry men who are a bit older than they are. Men display cars, houses, gifts, and expensive dinners to attract women.

Dating someone who is physically attractive increases a man’s status, while it increases a woman’s status somewhat. In contrast, a man who dates an unattractive woman experiences a moderate decrease in status, whereas a woman who dates an unattractive man experiences only a trivial decrease in status.

The more income a man has, the more likely they are to seek younger partners.

The long-time prevalence of prostitution does not mean that it is an adaptation (a result of selection). Rather, it is probably a consequences of two things – men’s desire of low-cost casual sex, and women either wanting or needing to offer sex for money.

One key benefit of casual sex to women is immediate access to resources. In a ancestral tribe thousands of years ago, a lucky hunter who takes down a deer is most likely to mate with a very hungry woman.

Women don’t like stinginess. This signals that the man is unlikely to devote an immediate supply of resources.
