The Art of Worldly Wisdom Review

Oráculo manual / El arte de la prudencia
Published: 12/1/1991
The remarkable best-seller -- a long-lost, 300-year-old book of wisdom on how to live successfully yet responsibly in a society governed by self-interest -- as acute as Machiavelli yet as humanistic and scrupulously moral as Marcus Aurelius.

The Art of Worldly Wisdom is a text that is over 300 years old. In it, we find aphorisms, written in beautiful prose, that contain advice on how to behave in the world. Gracian offers pragmatic insights in dealing with one’s self and other people. I have categorized these aphorisms to allow the reader to better understand the core messages of the book. The general message of the book is to be pragmatic, but pragmatism consists not only in cunning but in virtue. Not only in hard work but in finesse. Not only in making use of friends, but in making use of enemies.
