Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in our skin that keeps it moisturized and supple. As we age, our skin produces less hyaluronic acid, which can lead to wrinkles and dryness. Hyaluronic acid supplements are designed to replenish the loss of this important substance, but are they safe? Let’s take a closer look
Are Hyaluronic Acid Supplements Safe?
Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is already present in our bodies, so it stands to reason that taking a supplement would be safe. However, as with any supplement, it is always best to speak with a physician before starting any new supplement regimen. This is especially true if you are pregnant or nursing, as there is not enough research at this time to know if hyaluronic acid supplements are safe for women who are pregnant or nursing.
What Are the Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid Supplements?
Hyaluronic acid supplements have been shown to improve skin moisture and reduce wrinkles. In one study, women who took a hyaluronic acid supplement for eight weeks had significant improvements in skin moisture and elasticity compared to the placebo group. The women also had a decrease in wrinkle depth.
Another study looked at the effect of hyaluronic acid on joint pain. The study found that participants who took a hyaluronic acid supplement had less joint pain and stiffness than those who did not take the supplement. The participants who took the supplement also had better physical function than those who did not take the supplement.
Based on the available research, it appears that hyaluronic acid supplements are safe and offer benefits for both skin and joint health. If you are considering taking a hyaluronic acid supplement, speak with your physician first to ensure it is right for you.
